Galloway Hills

We are a UK based specialist opal  website, featuring exclusive hand made opal jewellery, antique/vintage jewellery and unmounted opals.  We are lucky enough to be able to live and work in the beautiful rolling countryside of the Scottish borders of Dumfries and Galloway. We are close to the famous Border Esk river and spend much of our leisure time fishing for wild salmon. My working time is spent cutting and polishing opals from the rough stones and setting them in antique and vintage jewellery, which I refurbish beforehand.

Anita designs and makes original one-off pendants, using our own polished stones.

Prior to constructing this website, we traded exclusively on Ebay, achieving a 100% feedback record on 4346 sales (see testimonials).
Now that we have Arno, a Dutch master goldsmith, as well as a Birmingham firm of jewellers on board we are able to offer brand new, unique one-off designer pieces, which are made to the highest standard of quality, exclusively for Opalart.

We are therefore able to combine the benefits of a rural lifestyle with the International trading opportunities offered by the Internet.

We visit the opal fields of Australia every two years, where we do most of our buying, direct from the miners themselves. This is always a great experience, with the frontier feel of Lightning Ridge, its tales of “ratters”, stealing from the mines at night, greased ladders, explosive shotgun shells to deter them and stories of the massive opals that “got away”. Combine that with late night poker games and swimming in the natural open-air hot water baths and you have a great holiday as well as a business trip.

We hope you will share our enthusiasm for this beautiful gemstone and we look forward to your custom.

The video link below shows this process and the opals in their natural state before cutting and polishing.
