This opal pedant contains a stone from the Coober Pedy mines. I neglected to weigh it before it set it in, but I estimate that it is between 5 and 6 carat. It is drop-shaped and is 1,6cm long and 1.1cm wide at its widest point. Its general appearance is light blue, but really it has a pale grey background with good, broad flashes of blue or green, according to the angle of the light. Because the opal’s relatively large size, I set in in a simple silver setting, so that the metalwork should not take away from the stone. The entire pendant is 2.6cm long, and the back of the hanger is hallmarked for Edinburgh 2018.
