This pendant is set with an unusual Lightning Ridge black straw opal. The straw pattern derives its name from the irregular, but linear formation of the silicates on the underlying potch, which makes it look like randomly distributed stalks of straw. It is a good-sized quality stone of about 5 carats. It is oval in shape, measures 1.6cm x 1.1cm and displays linear flashes of bright blue on its dark blue-grey background. I have set this stone in Sterling silver in a sloping, curved surround, which leaves the stone free to stand out by itself, yet enhances it further through just the right amount and type of metalwork, which adds to the overall beauty and value of this piece. The entire pendant is 4.1cm long, 2.5cm wide and weighs 6.09 grams. It therefore is a fairly chunky item of a timeless design that can be worn with just about everything. The back is hallmarked for Edinburgh 2017. It comes with an 18″ (45cm) Sterling silver snake chain and will be sent gift boxed.
