UK Size. J…..USA Size. 4.75
This is a terrific antique ring, which is set with a central star sapphire, surrounded by 11 lapis lazuli.
Together, they form a cluster of 2cm x 1.8cm with a height of 1cm above the finger, which makes it quite an impressive piece. The star in the sapphire is almost impossible to photograph in all its beauty, but I finally succeeded under artificial light (see first photo). You will see that the sapphire is a mid blue with the star itself very regular and unbroken. The sapphire is domed and is 1cm long and 8mm wide.
It is set in its own star-shaped textured gold surround, and the lapis stones in the outer ring all have individual long gold claws, which increase the overall star-shaped impression.
The ring is not hallmarked, but we have acid tested it and found it to be 14 carat or better, but not as good as 18 carat. It is probably 15 carat, which was a Victorian and Edwardian standard.
A difficult ring to date precisely, but from the style of the ring, I would think it Edwardian Circa.1910 or thereabouts. The small ring size would underpin this dating to a degree, being a UK Size. J…..USA Size. 4.75.
It is probably a unique custom-made ring, which has been privately commissioned. The ring weighs a respectable 8.24 grams and is in great condition, with no damage/repair or obvious signs of wear.
I am not a gemologist, so am unsure whether this is a natural star sapphire or synthetic, but, to be on the safe side, have priced it as the latter. A stunning eye-catching period ring in great condition.
