This is a beautiful, antique brooch, which is made in the shape of a butterfly. The wings and the body are set with lots of pearls of different sizes, and the eyes are made of tiny rubies. A huge amount of work has gone into the making of this piece, down to the fine details, such as the wee antennae and the little spikes at the bottom of the wings. The brooch also has a safety chain, which is always a sign of quality. The metal is 9 carat gold, which is hallmarked 375 with the maker’s initials of H&SL (see photos). The date letter is probably an f, but in the absence of a town mark, I cannot tell its exact age. I would guess that the brooch is likely to be Edwardian. It has a wing span of 3.6 cm and is 2cm high. It weighs 5.14 grams and is in superb condition throughout.
