This is an impressive 9ct gold ring, which is set with a faceted garnet. The oval-shaped stone is 1.1cm long and 8mm wide. It is set in a sizeable, textured surround, which makes the entire ring head 2.1cm long and 1.5 cm wide. It sits about 6mm high above your finger. The shoulders are split and sloping backward to make the ring head stand out even more distinctly. The inside is hallmarked for Birmingham with the date letter z (see photo), which would date it to 1899. This is not entirely conclusive, because in the following decades the Birmingham assay office used similar letters z, but this is the only one that comes in a rectangular cartouche, and it would be underpinned by the mention of the number 9 in addition to 375, which was sometimes done to clarify the newly introduced system. – The ring is size L, weighs 4.50 grams and is in excellent condition.
