This is a vintage 9Ct gold ring, which is hallmarked for Birmingham, but I can’t make up my mind whether the date letter stands for 1943 or 1968 (see photo). I have set it with a black Australian opal from Lightning Ridge. This stone is classified as a black opal, because the opal silicates have formed on a dark backing stone, in this case a slate grey one. The stone is basically turquoise or green and displays ample lighter green fire. It is oval in shape, 1.2cm long and 1cm wide. Together with the decorative scrollwork around the stone, the ring head is 1.7cm long and 1.4cm wide. The ring is size K and is in excellent condition – a very dressy item, which will not fail to be noticed.
